Setting

Welcome to the Setting Hub, where we explore the different contexts in which psychedelics are used and their role in Western culture.

Psychedelics have their roots in the shamanic traditions of ancient cultures. These societies understood the powerful effects of these substances and used them within a structured cultural framework to ensure positive outcomes and reduce risks.

Over time, the environments for using psychedelics have expanded from sacred rituals to more casual settings like parties, therapeutic sessions, group retreats, and clinical environments. Each setting offers a unique approach to the psychedelic experience, reflecting a wide range of purposes and results.

However, as these practices have spread, there has been a risk of cultural misappropriation. Psychedelics are sometimes removed from their traditional contexts and used without the original cultural safeguards. The move from academic and therapeutic use to commercial markets has sometimes led to unregulated use, where profit can take precedence over the integrity of the experience.

This adoption of psychedelic plants in Western culture often reflects a mindset that views nature as something to be exploited. Indigenous cultures have long valued these plants for their spiritual and healing properties. However, Western attitudes can sometimes lead to the commercialization of these plants without respecting their cultural significance. A true understanding of psychedelic plants involves acknowledging the wisdom of indigenous traditions and fostering a respectful connection to nature.

The rise of social media influencers in the wellness space has added another layer to this issue, often encouraging the use of psychedelics for various mental health concerns without emphasizing the need for experienced guidance. This can increase the risk of misuse and negative outcomes.

Today’s landscape of psychedelic use is a complex mix of ancient wisdom and modern practices, reverence and commercialization, with significant effects on how these substances fit into contemporary society.
