Undo cuts to The Global Fund
The Global Fund is an international financing and partnership organisation that supports and funds projects around the world with the aim of eradicating the epidemics of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. But drastic cuts to international aid could threaten the fight for global health. Mainline calls on countries to undo those cuts.
Through their work, the Global Fund have been able to provide testing and treatment for millions across the globe and have worked hard to strengthen global health security to help detect, track, and contain new outbreaks of infectious diseases. However, global health is increasingly under threat from dwindling international funding, jeopardising the fight against infectious diseases. Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump cut $5bn in foreign aid and British Prime Minister Keir announced this year that he will reduce the UK’s aid spending to its the lowest level since 1999. This drastic reduction in international aid is a huge blow to the Global Fund, who receive 94% of their funding from donor governments.
Mainline is a provider of technical assistance for the Global Fund and has recently worked with partners in Pakistan, Nepal, and Zimbabwe, fighting back against HIV and tuberculosis transmission amongst people who use drugs.
The Global Fund is attempting to raise $18 billion for its work from 2027 to 2029, creating new finance solutions and focusing their attention towards the private sector. If they do, the Global Fund estimates they can help save 23 million lives between 2027 and 2029 and reduce the mortality rate from AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria by 64% by 2029.
